Cowboys & Calico – Deal of the Day!

Readers of historical western romance cannot seem to get enough of this wonderful new collection of stories, Cowboys & Calico.  Five bestselling Western romance authors have come together to bring you one collection of all-new stories that will sweep you off your feet!

This reader has read the entire set and here is my review. I’ve tried to not offer any spoiler alerts with this review.

My Review: I am truly enjoying this boxset. There are several excellent, romantic stories in here that have touched my heart.

A BROKEN WING by Amelia C. Adams – the story between Trinity and Raymond made me chuckle as they created stories and imagined things about people. Trinity is a feisty heroine who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and is torn with the decisions she must make.

THE MARSHAL’S REBELLIOUS BRIDE by Cassie Hayes – Griff and Catherine are involved in a dance around each other, neither one wanting to be the one to make the first move. Both are sure they cannot stand the other one but fate has a different plan. If they both survive, will love play a role? A great revisit of the Dalton families and their lives as well!

COURTING MISS CARTWRIGHT by Kristin Holt – A touching story about Felicity and her half-sister Temperance.  Rocky is torn between courting one sister and falling in love with another. What will his choice be?  And will that choice tear apart the bond that the sisters have just found with each other?  An emotional tale of what a child out of wedlock faced in days gone by.

WANTED: THE PERFECT HUSBAND by Margery Scott – A great story about a woman advertising for a husband, well, sort of.  Sybil has come west due to her father’s will. In order to inherit, she needs a husband and Devin comes highly recommended.  The only catch – he doesn’t want to be married. Sybil starts off with a short list of requirements in her ad and then adds to the list each and every time something goes wrong.  And something will go wrong, because only Devin is the perfect husband for her.  This story made me chuckle and has so many traits that are still true today. We think that love will be enough until we start to spend time with various personalities and we add more and more to our list of desired qualities.

MAIL ORDER MIDWIFE by Kirsten Osbourne – Do I need to say anything about Kirsten’s mail order brides books? The Brides of Beckham is a popular series and this story reminds me why we love her so. Patsy is a mail order midwife who travels west to become the bride of Dr. Wesley Hardy. Little Emily will steal your heart as she struggles to be a girl in a boy’s world and forge her own path. There are challenges, there is laughter, there is sweetness and, I suspect, there are thousands of readers chanting ‘More! More!’

What others are saying:

“Bravo Ladies! You know how you get one of the books with more than one book in it. You like this book, you like that book, but rarely all of them. Don’t you worry, these five are all winners! I couldn’t pick a favorite. I loved them all. Enjoy all five! Bravo again!”

“I can’t say anything except WOW WOW WOW, usually when you by a box set there is maybe one book that didn’t really hold your interest but not with this one each book gets you right from the start all the way to the end.”

“This anthology is worth 10 stars. All of the stories were wonderful, they had characters and situations you could relate to and best of all they all had epilogue.”

“Wonderful stories! Rarely do I find an anthology where I actually enjoy every story in the set. But this is one of them! All authors are extremely talented! I couldn’t pick a favorite if I had to! All of them were delightful.”

Only $0.99 on Amazon today or free through Kindle Unlimited! A synopsis of the stories are noted below. This is a GREAT deal and worth more than the diet coke from McDonald’s that I would have spent that dollar on!

MAIL ORDER MIDWIFE by Kirsten Osbourne – Widowed midwife Patsy Lawrence spent too much time working and not enough with her young daughter. She knew Emily’s childhood would be over before she realized it, so she responded to an ad for a mail-order bride, hoping for a better future for them both.

Dr. Wesley Hardy needed a wife to complete him, so he sent a letter to a mail-order bride agency back East. When he received a letter from a widow with a young daughter, he was thrilled with everything but her profession. Could he live with the fact that his new bride was a midwife? Or would they be destined to live without love for the rest of their days?

A BROKEN WING by Amelia C. Adams – Bored beyond all reason while riding a train from Missouri to Colorado, Trinity Scott amuses herself by imagining things about the passengers around her, including the handsome man sitting across the aisle. With his dark curly hair and warm brown eyes, he’s certainly intriguing, and the fact that his arm is in a sling makes him all the more a curiosity.

But when three dangerous men board the train, her desire for adventure and excitement takes a sinister turn, and she must call on her inner strength to do what’s needed to survive.

THE MARSHAL’S REBELLIOUS BRIDE by Cassie Hayes – U.S. Marshal Curtis ‘Griff’ Griffith is on the trail of a wanted man. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by the newest resident of the Dalton Brothers Ranch. So why does he keep returning? It’s certainly not to see the beautiful-but-bullheaded Catherine James.

Catherine has no interest in men or marriage, but there aren’t many choices for single ladies to earn a living on a remote Texas ranch. When she discovers that she holds the key to capturing the outlaw — and collecting some of the reward — she doesn’t hesitate to force Griff’s hand.

Will they kill each other before they find the murderer, or will they risk their damaged hearts for a shot at a new life?

COURTING MISS CARTWRIGHT by Kristin Holt – Courtship, by the book, is supposed to be easy…

As the daughter of an unwed mother, Felicity Percival is accustomed to rejection. Her mother was her only family … until she is summoned to the reading of her father’s will. To learn he was a married preacher with a second daughter horrifies her. The stipulations attached to her inheritance infuriate her. The last thing she expects is the emergence of truths that destroy her life-long beliefs. The last thing she wants is to feel the blush of first love for a man she can’t have.

The road to Happily Ever After should not be rocky, especially for level-headed, rule-following Rocky Gideon. His courtship of the minister’s daughter is successful and on track, surviving everything life throws at them … except the appearance of the preacher’s other daughter. Felicity asks too many questions, forces him to evaluate his carefully constructed plan, and somehow steals his heart.

Rocky desperately needs a solid marriage that will go the distance … so why does he yearn for the wrong sister?

WANTED: THE PERFECT HUSBAND by Margery Scott – Sybil Franklin needs a husband—fast! In order to keep her ranch, she must be married within thirteen days. Devin McGregor meets all her requirements and comes highly recommended, but he has no interest in marriage.

Devin McGregor had a ranch once, a fiancée, a future. He made a mistake, and it cost him everything. Now, even though he’d love to own his own land again, he’s afraid to risk failure.

Sybil decides to post an advertisement for the perfect husband. As Devin tries to protect her from being taken advantage of, his feelings for her grow, but his fear of failing her won’t let him accept her proposal.

Both Sybil and Devin have choices, but making the right choice means they could both lose everything.

Catching Up with Merry Farmer & Kirsten Osbourne

Today, we catch up with the Culpepper Cowgirls – the two authors of the fabulous new contemporary series, Culpepper Cowboys.

What gave you the idea for Culpepper Cowboys?

Kirsten – Someone suggested I write about a town. I like to write marriage of convenience books, so I thought about how to make it work, and I came up with the idea of using Dr. Lachele, who was the matchmaker in my At the Altar books to match up four brothers, and I figured we could go from there. We did.

Merry – Honestly, it was Kirsten’s idea. She had an epiphany about doing a series with four sisters marrying four brothers. We’d been friends for a while, so she picked on me…I mean, asked me if I’d like to join her. I’ve wanted to write more contemporary romances, and this was exactly what I’d been looking for!

As far as how I came up with the ideas for the stories themselves, the books needed to be light and humorous to match our writing styles. I’ve always considered myself as writing emotional, heart-felt stories. So the challenge of writing humor was an awesome one. As we came up with the characters, I just kept asking myself, “What would be the funniest thing that could happen to these people?” That’s still my jumping-off-point for each book.

Is it difficult to co-write?

Merry – Yes and no. And the answer has been different for different books in the series. The first four were easy-peasy, mostly because Kirsten and I planned a lot. We also wrote them one at a time, read each other’s work, and then proceeded with our own stories. The fifth and sixth books were harder because we were writing them simultaneously, and we kept writing things that directly conflicted. There were a few days there where I thought the two of us would probably kill each other! *LOL* Fortunately, Kirsten and I actually are friends, and we were able to work things out literarily. But lesson learned. Since those books, we’ve been careful not to have our story timelines or characters overlap too much, while including as much crossover as possible. We’ve each had to tweak a few things to make sure every detail works for both of us, but nothing major. It’s been incredibly fun to work together overall! Kirsten is the best! Although I’m still convinced she wants to kick my tush half the time.

Kirsten – Most of the time Merry and I kind of mesh when we write. Sometimes we have to iron out little tiny details that are important to one of us for whatever reason, and we do and it works. It’s really been as seamless a process as writing with another person can be.

Whose story is up next?

Kirsten – Next story will be Felicity and Allen. Felicity is one of the Quinlan cousins who started a ranch with Grace. Allen will be someone who comes in to work on the bakery, expanding it to add a breakfast area.

Merry – That would be Kirsten’s story about Felicity, Contractor’s Cookies. I know a little bit about what she’s going to do with it, but I can’t wait to read the full story! After that, I’ll be writing about Sly O’Donnell and his romantic adventures in Tycoon’s Tryst.

Have the historical western romance readers been supportive of this contemporary series?

Merry – Yeah, I think they have. It’s a little outside of their box, but in my experience, readers are wonderfully versatile. They’ll try anything as long as they know the characters will be engaging and the stories will be fun.

Kirsten – For the most part, they really have! There are some die-hard historical fans who won’t even try them, but they’re missing out, because these are fun books about sexy cowboys.

What do you like best about cowboys?

Merry – I like the freedom and ruggedness that they have. They aren’t tied down to desks or cities or commutes. I feel like I can write a cowboy hero with a much easier manner to him. Not to mention that with all that physical work, they’re pretty buff! I like writing about the countryside. My trip through Wyoming this past April was awesome in terms of getting a feel for the land and the potential it has. It really helped me to write the cowboy characters.

Actually, funny thing…. I have Honor Culpepper suffering from the altitude as soon as she arrives in Culpepper. That little detail got into the book because that’s exactly what happened to me when I ventured into Wyoming. It’s at such a high elevation that anyone who has lived close to sea level will have a hard time breathing until they adjust. I didn’t stay long enough to adapt, but all those physical sensations I experienced and the anxiety that went along with it totally informed Honor’s character and her reactions.

Oh, but that’s not about cowboys. Oh well. 😉 It’s about Wyoming, and I LOVED Wyoming! I’d love to go back.

Kirsten – I like how they look. What do I like least about them? Usually how they smell. Cowboys sure are handsome, though.

What book of yours are you most proud of and why?

Kirsten – It’s going to be two together. Lazy Love and Literary Love. I came up with the idea for Lazy Love, and I never meant to write it. But I couldn’t seem to stop myself. And then I realized that I had to write Literary Love. There is so much of me in both of those books. My heart lives inside them. I think they’re by far the best books I’ve ever written, and they take my writing to the next level. I wish more people would give them a chance!

Merry – Gosh, that’s like asking me to pick a favorite child! I’m proud of my medieval, Noble Hearts series, because those are the first books I dared to publish (even though I’m a much better writer now). I’m proud of my Paradise Ranch series because I LOVE the little town of Haskell, Wyoming that I invented, I love the characters, and I love how challenged I’ve been by writing both a spicy and a sweet version. And I potentially love my new Nerds of Paradise series that is coming this fall, which is the contemporary world of Haskell, because I get to write about nerdy guys/girls and cowboys/cowgirls getting matched! And of course I love these Culpepper Cowboys books because readers are responding so well to them and falling in love with the world Kirsten and I have created.

Introducing ‘Montana Sky’ Kindle World Series – Part Three

‘Montana Sky’ Kindle World Series

Fourteen awesome authors launched the new ‘Montana Sky’ Kindle World Series, based on Debra Holland’s ‘Montana Sky’ series.  These books are primarily set in the mining town of Morgan’s Crossing, although some of the characters pass through Sweetwater Springs on their way to the mining town. The Pioneer Hearts blog is exploring three more of the Kindle World stories below.

‘Mail Order Machinations’ by  Kirsten Osbourne ~

Sisters Esther and Coral Carruthers realize they need to leave town quickly to escape the scandal of their father’s crime. Esther chooses to become a mail-order bride in faraway Montana Territory rather than face her former fiancé at every turn. The only problem is she must take her younger, and more capable sister, with her when she goes.

Brody Finnegan sends away for a mail-order bride and is thrilled when Esther answers his letter, not realizing she will be bringing her younger sister with her. He’s not happy when he spots the two of them together, but agrees to still marry Esther taking them both on. Will Esther and Brody be able to get past her initial deception and find love together? Or will having Coral involved ruin everything?

‘Wesley’s Unexpected Bride’ by Carré White ~

Widower Wesley Briggs is content to raise his son and work his ranch alone, until one of his cowhands, Rory Wise, who has already ordered a mail order bride, breaks his back in a fall. When Wesley fetches Rory’s bride from the station, he encounters a lovely, vulnerable woman.

After her father’s death, Frances Brewbaker and her four sisters must find husbands at once. Agreeing to move to Montana and marry a stranger, she embarks on the adventure. She is met at the depot, not by her intended, but by his employer, who she finds appealing and ruggedly handsome.

Faced with the prospect of losing her intended, Frances must decide if she will stay in the Montana Territory. The widower and his son, Jason, are much in need of a woman’s touch to soften their rough edges. Jason adores her, yet Wesley’s feelings are infinitely more complex, because he has fallen in love with Frances. Can he convince her to stay and marry him?

The Cowboy’s Secret’ by Crystal Green ~

A cowboy’s hidden heart…

Silent, strong Boone Ross has a secret, and after beautiful widow Lorena Bell arrives at the ranch where he works, that secret only grows, threatening to consume them both.

The past has always been a step behind Boone, but now it’s coming closer and closer. Is it time to run again, or will he stay and fight for a love that can bring him out of his self-imposed darkness?

This sweet 28,000 word novella takes place during Debra Holland’s BENEATH MONTANA’S SKY, while John Carter is back East choosing a bride.

These are only three of the exciting fourteen books in the Montana Sky Kindle World.  The fourteen books can be read in any order.  Additional book highlights will be given tomorrow on the Pioneer Hearts blog!

INTRODUCING DEBRA HOLLAND’S “MONTANA SKY” KINDLE WORLD

A Note from Debra Holland ~

Amazon Kindle Worlds are fan fiction contracted stories written by guest authors in the Montana Sky Series, which includes my Mail-Order Brides of the West books. The Montana Sky series books range from stirring sweeping frontier romances to small, heartfelt stories of an individual overcoming obstacles and loss.

After I first contracted with Amazon to have a Montana Sky Kindle World, I reached out to historical or contemporary Western romance authors to see it they wanted to write stories in my “world.” Most of these authors were already friends of mine, or I knew them from the Pioneer Hearts Facebook group. In addition, I’d read and enjoyed some of their books.

I wanted my guest authors to be able to tie their own series into mine. So in these KW stories, readers will see familiar characters from my books as well as characters that may have a connection to a guest author’s series. Aside from providing some guidance about my series, I haven’t had anything to do with writing these books. They will be as new to me as they are to the readers.

The awesome fourteen launch authors have primarily set their books in the mining town of Morgan’s Crossing, although some of the characters pass through Sweetwater Springs on their way to the mining town. I’m looking forward to reading these authors’ stories! Explore the books at: https://kindleworlds.amazon.com/world/montanasky

Christmas Caring: A Christmas Charity Short Story Anthology

Have you heard about the Christmas Caring: A Christmas Charity Short Story Anthology? It’s the perfect gift for the readers in your life because it’s the gift that keeps on giving and supports an absolutely wonderful cause!

This anthology, full of fun Christmas short stories by bestselling writers and new-comers alike, is bound to get you into the Christmas spirit. It includes twenty-four short stories by David Farland, Kevin J. Anderson, Debra Holland, Kirsten Osbourne, Peggy L Henderson, Lorena Dove, L.L. Muir, CS Martin, Linda Hubalek, CJ Samuels, Carra Copelin, Margery Scott, Janelle Daniels, Ray Anselmo, Marie Piper, Caroline Lee, Sam Knight, Kit Morgan, Margaret Tanner, Rain Trueax, Kirsten Lynn, Jaclyn Weist, Jenna Eatough, and Patricia “PacJac” Carroll.

Read more about this wonderful cause and charity below, as I spoke with Kirsten Osbourne about the project~

How did the idea for a Christmas Caring Charity come about?

I was chatting on Friday night, the eleventh of December, with Jenna Eatough, a friend who had recently won first place in a short story contest for her Christmas story. Jenna was trying to figure out what she could do with that short story. I suggested we do an anthology, because I had a Christmas short story sitting around as well, and it relates to my Brides of Beckham series, but I didn’t want to publish something quite so short on its own. So we both, separately, started to recruit people.

How did you go about recruiting other authors?

I posted in the author group for Pioneer Hearts, thinking someone might have a short story sitting on the shelf that would work. Somehow, that simple question, was taken as a writing challenge—something to stretch “writing muscles.” Authors were given a deadline of noon on Monday, a mere three days later. I thought they’d clean up a story they already had and submit that. But, no, people started writing.

How many authors were you able to recruit?

Between Jenna and I, we were able to “draft” twenty-two other people into the anthology. Lorena Dove kindly offered to format the book, which took some of the weight off my shoulders. I contacted my cover artist, Erin Dameron-Hill, and we got started.

And, the proceeds from the anthology go directly to charity?

Yes, the authors generously supported their share of the proceeds going to my favorite charity, Mission Arlington.

NOTE: As a reader, this blogger knows that authors are a generous group of individuals. Free books, prizes, and charity – authors are always willing to support those in need. If you have never been in need, consider yourself blessed. The phrase “it takes a village to raise a child” still applies today and we are blessed to have charities available to meet an ever-growing need.

What is Mission Arlington?

Mission Arlington is a charity I’ve volunteered with and supported for years. They provide aid in every way imaginable for people who need it. They’ve provided cars, appliances, financial aid, etc. They have a huge food bank and “clothing store.” I’ve truly never seen anything like it.

What do you like most about Mission Arlington?

My favorite thing they do is provide Christmas for needy children. They service tens of thousands of children every year with their Christmas store. I was blessed to be part of it one year, and it truly overwhelmed me. Every parent gets to “shop” in a store, choosing gifts for all children under the age of eighteen. They even help wrap the gifts. It’s a beautiful thing.

Thank you, Kirsten Osbourne, for answering my questions about the new anthology and Mission Arlington.

If you haven’t picked up Christmas Caring: A Christmas Charity Short Story Anthology, what are you waiting for? It’s the perfect gift for the readers in your life because it’s the gift that keeps on giving and supports an absolutely wonderful cause!

Don’t forget, all proceeds from this anthology will be donated to Mission Arlington, a charity which helps the needy, including assisting with rent, utilities, clothing, food, doctor, and dental. It also provides Christmas gifts for tens of thousands of children every year. For Thanksgiving, 2015, they served 27,000 people.
