Excerpt from Matthew’s Freedom ~

Brenna sighed and dismissed them with a curt, “Good day.”

Eddie and Matthew rode away from the homestead toward Charlie’s land. “Thanks for the help.” Matthew said, still smarting from being chastised for his stupidity.

Eddie gave him a wide grin. “Boy, you stepped into a heap of dung right there. I know better than to try to dig you out by your boots until she was good and ready to let you free.” He cackled loudly. “You shoulda’ seen the look on your face as she was letting you have it.”

Matthew gave him a dirty look. Hopefully, that conversation stayed between the three of them. His sister would have his hide if she heard what a donkey’s behind he’d made of himself. But despite the regret he felt, he felt a twinge of something else as he pictured the sparks shooting from Brenna’s brown eyes and the way her chin tilted up in defiance when she was angered. That woman was a force to be reckoned with, and God help him, he longed for a chance to tame her.

West Texas Christmas Trilogy

I am excited to share this wonderful new series by Hebby Roman. I have posted my reviews for each of the books below and I hope that you will check out her delightful series about a West Texas Christmas. Leave a comment by Monday, 11/7 about which book you’d like to read and one lucky person will win!

About Hebby Roman

I grew up in Del Rio, Texas, on the border to Old Mexico and in a ranching community. Actually, Del Rio used to be known as the Wool and Mohair Capital of the World. Our small town was not only surrounded by huge sheep ranches, but the wealthy ranchers of the area were the town’s “aristocracy.” My sister married into one of the pioneer sheep ranching families, and I spent many of my teenaged summers helping to herd sheep on horseback. My father spent over thirty years working on the railroad, as a brakeman, fireman, and engineer. Unfortunately, we lost him in a train accident when I was 18 years old, near Langtry, Texas.

Del Rio was and is at the edge of the West Texas frontier, and if you traveled just a few miles west of town, you felt as if time had stood still and you were back in the nineteenth century. Langtry, Texas, which was semi-famous for Judge Roy Bean’s “Law West of the Pecos” was one of the frontier outposts, which draws thousands of tourists a year and a place that hasn’t changed since the turn of the twentieth century. By some, the Judge was seen as a true western hero, but the real story about him is a little more complicated. He was a rough and tough guy with a touch of crudeness, just like the Old West times when he lived. I’ve taken elements of these “real life” circumstances where I grew up and woven them together in this western historical romance series.

I hope you’ll enjoy the trip, back to the old west of Langtry, TX, set in the nineteenth century.  These books were a joy to write because they allowed me to return to my roots where I was born and raised and remember all the times I spent on my brother-in-law’s ranch.

Mistletoe Christmas book coverA Mistletoe Christmas (Book Three)

Ginny Brown is a poor seamstress’ daughter who worships the ground Chad MacKillian walks on… from afar. For as long as she can remember, she’s been in love with the prominent rancher. Befriended by Chad’s sister, Ginny overcomes her shyness when Chad finally notices her.

Unknown to Ginny or his sister, Chad is already engaged to the neighboring rancher’s daughter, but their engagement is a business arrangement. The more time Chad spends with Ginny, the more he questions his future plans. Torn between honoring his engagement and his growing feelings for Ginny, he avoids making a decision.

When Chad’s fiancée catches him kissing Ginny beneath the mistletoe, she breaks their engagement. Chad is relieved to be free, but Ginny is humiliated and has had enough of his inconstancy. Faced with losing Ginny and fighting off outlaws bent on revenge, Chad begs Ginny to marry him. But can Chad convince Ginny he really loves her and is eager for her to be his wife?

Let It Be Christmas book coverMy review: Which should he follow – his heart or his word?

Ooh, this is an interesting one. Chad is engaged to one woman but falls in love with another. Given the times, it is a huge quandry – does he follow his heart or does he keep his word and his promise to marry and unite their two ranches. Ginny is an absolute sweetheart and my heart cheered for her as the underdog throughout this story.  Speaking of dogs, Chad gets it all wrong – time and time again until I wanted to reach through the pages and slap him!  Why is it so difficult for a man to listen to his heart until it’s too late? I enjoyed this third book in the series very much and encourage readers to check it out!

Let It Be Christmas (Book Two)

After losing both her parents, Lindsay MacKillian has been living with her Aunt Minerva in Boston, learning to be a lady. When her unscrupulous fiancé gets her in the family way and absconds, she escapes home to Langtry, Texas to hide her shame.

Bart Houghton, a professional gambler, wants to quit his old profession and become a rancher, giving the MacKillian’s ranch a much needed infusion of capital. But he didn’t count on marrying Chad’s sister as part of the deal. And to make matters worse, Lindsay doesn’t approve of his former profession and believes he is unworthy as a husband.

Lindsay and Bart, despite their differences and having a marriage in name only, can’t help but being attracted to each other. As their attraction matures, they have to face the obstacles of their pasts. Can Lindsay put aside her preconceived notions about Bart? Is Bart ready to settle down and give Lindsay the family she wants?

My review: Two Hearts from Different Pasts

Lindsay is in a tough spot, being with child. She made a mistake, allowing her fiancé one night of marital privileges and he has left her. She travels home to the family ranch to decide what to do.

Bart is tired of gambling and wants a place of his own. He enters into a pact with Chad and agrees to marry Lindsay and give her unborn child his name. He didn’t plan on falling in love with her, despite her judgmental nature.  But is love enough? Or is his heart the one thing Bart is not willing to gamble away?

Hard Candy Christmas book cover

A Hard Candy Christmas (Book One)

Abigail Kerr Sanford is a single mother struggling to raise her child. Sheriff Clint Graham is a man scarred by his background and family tragedies. Drawn into a bitter feud between ranchers and railroaders, Abigail and Clint work together to resolve the feud, learning to respect and trust each other. And as their feelings deepen, they recognize their love is the most special Christmas gift of all.

My review: A Sweet Christmas Treat!

This sweet story introduces us to Abigail, a single mother whose husband has run off and left her several years prior. Abigail’s father is a penny-hoarding, grumpy man who does not seem to have much love for family. Abigail must run the boardinghouse to earn her keep and care for her son. Clint Graham is the newly appointed sheriff, who is also a rancher. Sheriff Graham is trying to walk a fine line between his ranching friends and the railroad folks who are non-negotiable in their dealings. Clint is also trying to escape the memories he left behind on his ranch and start anew. He gains a room at Abigail’s boardinghouse and is smitten with Abby. However, she is a married woman who has a severe distrust for men. This is their story and their love grows and grows with each passing page. Everything comes to a head at Christmas when circumstances quickly change and their future is questionable.

Fun Facts About Kristy McCaffrey’s Wings of the West Series

By Kristy McCaffrey

Today I’m pleased to share the release of THE BLUEBIRD, Book 5 in my Wings of the West series. It’s taken me 13 years to complete this collection (which also includes a short novella), so I’m feeling a little nostalgic. Here’s a little background on the entire series.

wingsgraphic

The characters in THE WREN (Book 1) came to me when I was 15 years old. I saw a girl and two brothers. This grew into the characters of Molly Hart and Matt Ryan (and his brother Logan).

When I was 23, I moved across the country to attend graduate school in Pennsylvania. I drove with my mom and sister, and during a rest stop in Amarillo, Texas, I looked out over the flat, rolling plains and ‘saw’ a young Molly running among the tall grass.

Although it felt like Molly was stalking me to tell her story, I didn’t publish THE WREN until I was 37 years old. I wrote it while I had four kids under the age of 5 underfoot. Although I’d been compelled to write since I was a young girl, it took me that long to finally do something about it.

The character of Molly was named after my paternal great-grandmother—Mary Agnes “Molly” O’Rourke Kearney, who emigrated from Ireland. ‘Hart’ is a family name on my mother’s side.

While writing THE DOVE (Book 2), I traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico, and was able to find local research books that helped immensely in the layout of the town in 1877. If you’re a writer, do this. Often, local research isn’t available on the internet or Amazon.

THE SPARROW (Book 3) took the longest for me to write—about 6 years. While I took a lengthy break to focus on raising my children, I also became stuck in the story at the halfway point. This book employed my most intuitive writing, guiding me toward shamanism, a discipline I knew nothing about. I spent over two years attempting to understand the skills and techniques utilized in this ancient healing modality.

THE SPARROW is my most mixed-reviewed book. Readers either love it or hate it. For me, personally, it was a labor of love, albeit a painful labor at times. While I’ve considered cutting portions of the story to make it more marketable, it encompasses an interior emotional journey that has spoken to similar kindred souls. When a writer is pushed by some unknown force toward a work that makes little sense to her, sometimes the best thing to do is to step out of the way and let it be what it needs to be.

Although I now live in Arizona, I wrote THE BLACKBIRD (Book 4) without ever visiting southern Arizona (the location of the story). Clearly this goes against my earlier advice of visiting the setting of a book; however, I’m a very detail-oriented person (probably why I studied engineering in college) and I always immerse myself in intensive research whenever I write a book. I did my homework.

While writing THE BLUEBIRD (Book 5), I lost the file twice. The first time, the manuscript was two-thirds complete and I had no backup. It was a rude awakening about my lazy computer habits. I quickly cleaned up my act, but it took me a week before I could bring myself to sit down and write the book again. And then, near the end, I lost the file again. Thankfully, this time, I did have a backup. But my disillusionment with technology runs fairly deep now and I no longer trust ANY source completely, whether it be a computer hard drive, an external hard drive, a stick, or Dropbox. These days, I backup in four places every day.

Molly Rose Simms departs the Arizona Territory, eager for adventure, and travels to Colorado to visit her brother. Robert left two years ago to make his fortune in the booming silver town of Creede, and now Molly Rose hopes to convince him to accompany her to San Francisco, New York City, or even Europe. But Robert is nowhere to be found. All Molly Rose finds is his partner, a mysterious man known as The Jackal.

Jake McKenna has traveled the bustling streets of Istanbul, exotic ports in China, and the deserts of Morocco. His restless desire to explore has been the only constant in his life. When his search for the elusive and mythical Bluebird mining claim lands him a new partner, he must decide how far he’ll go to protect the stunning young woman who’s clearly in over her head. A home and hearth has never been on The Jackal’s agenda, but Molly Rose Simms is about to change his world in every conceivable way.

A sensuous historical western romance set in 1892 Colorado.

Excerpt

McKenna’s jet-black hair curled along the collar of his shirt, and a coal-colored stubble had sprouted on his strong jawline. When he shifted his gaze to her, his eyes put her in mind of molasses. Molly chewed on her lower lip and glanced away, lest McKenna catch her staring.

Shaking off her fascination, she asked, “How did you meet Robert?”

“In a poker game.”

Molly gasped. “Robert gambles?”

McKenna chuckled. “You’ve already been to a whorehouse. If you wanted to remain innocent, you shouldn’t have come to Creede.”

Her backside stiffened. “I’m not naïve to the ways of the world.”

Another grin lit his face. Her breath caught and her heart pounded more intensely. She honestly couldn’t look away. She’d read about people who possessed a charm that swayed the masses and opened doors with merely a glance, but she’d never met such a person.

What was the word she’d come across? Charisma, that was it. In this moment, the meaning became crystal clear.

“Whatever you say, Miss Simms. Why did you come to Creede?”

“To visit my brother, of course.”

“You came by yourself all the way from Tucson?”

“My folks believed that Robert would be here to meet me.”

He nodded, his amiable demeanor slipping a bit. She took a steadying breath to quiet the knot in her stomach that never quite receded. Please be all right, Robert.

“My folks thought that Robert would look after me,” she added, her voice muffled as rain continued to pound on the roof of the cabin. “But I assure you that I can look after myself.”

“I don’t doubt that. I’m at your service, nevertheless.”

“For what?”

“Protection.”

He held her gaze, and a frisson of awareness shot through her. She shifted her eyes to the stove. She hadn’t traveled all this way to fall for the first rugged buckaroo who crossed her path, charisma or not. She had more important things to do with her life first.

I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day

I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day

(Hearts of Owyhee novella)

A new novella by the talented Jacquie Rogers, released as part of the Prairie Rose Publications Third Birthday Bash.   Congratulations to Prairie Rose Publications as they continue to celebrate three successful years! Visit the Prairie Rose Publications Blog here for additional giveaways and historical western romance stories.

The
Murdock brothers have a fine ranch in Owyhee County, Idaho. The only things missing are wives and kids, so Hec orders a couple of brides for Christmas. The catch is, woman-shy Zeke doesn’t know about it. Dinah and Stella have a plan— If the grooms don’t work out, they’ll start a restaurant. Farm chores are hard enough, but a peckish chicken and a raging blizzard don’t help matters. Can Hec and Zeke capture their hearts?

There’s just something about Christmas that has “romance” splashed all over it—the season for sharing and putting our differences aside.

The whole idea of mail-order brides—why a woman would leave everything she knew for a man she didn’t know—fascinates me.  In this story, we have two brides.  Dinah Goode lost her husband and baby within a few weeks.  Her goal is to own a restaurant and women couldn’t be chefs in Cleveland.  But those rules didn’t apply in the Idaho Territory where women could own property in their own right, and the only way she could afford to get there was to accept a proposal as a mail-order bride.

Schoolteacher Stella Clemmons has stars in her eyes—she wants children but she’s already nearly thirty years old and time’s marching on.  Meeting Dinah on the train was fortuitous because now she has a plan.  If Mr. Ezekiel Murdock doesn’t pan out, she and Dinah will still be fine.  Restaurants were few and far between—and even then, she could still find the right man to marry.

But neither lady knows one thing about country life.  And neither brother is quite sure what to do with these city women.

I loved the idea that Hec ordered brides for himself and his brother for Christmas.  How romantic!  But can you imagine how surprised Zeke would be?  How would he react?  And how does the culture of the East blend with that of the West?

Enter-to-win-contestThis novella is part of the Prairie Rose Publications Third Birthday Bash.  Free books are being offered all week at http://prairierosepublications.blogspot.com

Would you like a copy of I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day?  Just tell us what you love about Christmas stories.  Do you read them year-around?  Does the snow cool you off on a hot August night?

Pioneer Hearts Amazon Store – Jacquie Rogers

I’m a former software designer, campaign manager, deli clerk, and cow milker, but always a bookworm. Reading is my passion–westerns, fantasies, historicals of any era, and all with a dash of romance. If an author can make me laugh, I’ll buy every book he/she ever wrote.

While I’m a country girl by birth, I currently live in suburbia with my very patient husband (important point: we are the staff of one cat) I don’t think you can ever take the country out of a girl’s heart. That’s probably why my stories often take place in Idaho where I grew up. (Hearts of Owyhee series and some of my short stories, too.)

All the Hearts of Owyhee novels and novellas are set in Owyhee County, Idaho Territory.  “Owyhee” is the original anglicized spelling of Hawaii, and the area was named after some fur trappers from the Sandwich Islands were lost there in 1819.

New Sweet Historical Release ~ Bride and Prejudice

Are you a lover of all things cowboys? Do you enjoy the romance of the Old West? Pioneer Hearts readers love stories about the wild west and the men and women who conquered it. Today’s author, sweet historical romance author Patricia PacJac Carroll, is the creator of the Mail Order Brides of Hickory Stick series. Book 8 in this series released today and the town is growing with each new arrival.

Bride and Prejudice: Historical Western Romance (#8 in the Mail Order Brides of Hickory Stick Series)

Jacqueline Bedel fled from her home and all she’d ever known. Escape. She couldn’t let Sebastian find her. Ever. With a last look at New Orleans, she clutched the letter in her hand and prayed she was running to a better man.

Dr. Blake Morgan wrestled with his past, the hold whiskey held over him, and loneliness. He needed a wife. A good woman would save him.

Come back to Hickory Stick and meet your favorite characters as the town deals with troubles and love in Bride and Prejudice.

Caroline’s Love is the first of the series. Each novella is a stand-alone story, but the characters and town of Hickory Stick are involved in each of the other stories.

I absolutely love the idea of these sweet historical stories. Thomas J. Connors decided he and his brother needed a wife. Since women were in short supply, he got the idea of sending off for one for him and one for his brother, Jackson. Even though Thomas and Jackson have found their wives, women are still arriving for Thomas J. Connors based on his lovingly-written letter published in multiple mail-order bride publications.

If you haven’t read the series yet, book one in the Hickory Stick series, Caroline’s Love, is also free on Amazon to all readers.

I am a writer, Christian first, and blessed beyond my imagination. I live in the Dallas-Ft Worth area of Texas with my wonderful treasure of a husband, my spoiled dog, Jacs, and my awesome son, Josh. Did I say I was blessed? The PacJac is from my initials and my husbands. I wouldn’t be able to write if it weren’t for him. I love adventure and the open road. The stories of the western era have always been a favorite of mine. I enjoy writing, and my goal is to write stories readers will enjoy.

Hope you are enjoying the series ~ Mail Order Brides of Hickory Stick. I have a new series this year set in Texas – Mail Order Brides of Misfit Ranch Bluebonnet, Texas

Cowboys & Calico – Deal of the Day!

Readers of historical western romance cannot seem to get enough of this wonderful new collection of stories, Cowboys & Calico.  Five bestselling Western romance authors have come together to bring you one collection of all-new stories that will sweep you off your feet!

This reader has read the entire set and here is my review. I’ve tried to not offer any spoiler alerts with this review.

My Review: I am truly enjoying this boxset. There are several excellent, romantic stories in here that have touched my heart.

A BROKEN WING by Amelia C. Adams – the story between Trinity and Raymond made me chuckle as they created stories and imagined things about people. Trinity is a feisty heroine who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and is torn with the decisions she must make.

THE MARSHAL’S REBELLIOUS BRIDE by Cassie Hayes – Griff and Catherine are involved in a dance around each other, neither one wanting to be the one to make the first move. Both are sure they cannot stand the other one but fate has a different plan. If they both survive, will love play a role? A great revisit of the Dalton families and their lives as well!

COURTING MISS CARTWRIGHT by Kristin Holt – A touching story about Felicity and her half-sister Temperance.  Rocky is torn between courting one sister and falling in love with another. What will his choice be?  And will that choice tear apart the bond that the sisters have just found with each other?  An emotional tale of what a child out of wedlock faced in days gone by.

WANTED: THE PERFECT HUSBAND by Margery Scott – A great story about a woman advertising for a husband, well, sort of.  Sybil has come west due to her father’s will. In order to inherit, she needs a husband and Devin comes highly recommended.  The only catch – he doesn’t want to be married. Sybil starts off with a short list of requirements in her ad and then adds to the list each and every time something goes wrong.  And something will go wrong, because only Devin is the perfect husband for her.  This story made me chuckle and has so many traits that are still true today. We think that love will be enough until we start to spend time with various personalities and we add more and more to our list of desired qualities.

MAIL ORDER MIDWIFE by Kirsten Osbourne – Do I need to say anything about Kirsten’s mail order brides books? The Brides of Beckham is a popular series and this story reminds me why we love her so. Patsy is a mail order midwife who travels west to become the bride of Dr. Wesley Hardy. Little Emily will steal your heart as she struggles to be a girl in a boy’s world and forge her own path. There are challenges, there is laughter, there is sweetness and, I suspect, there are thousands of readers chanting ‘More! More!’

What others are saying:

“Bravo Ladies! You know how you get one of the books with more than one book in it. You like this book, you like that book, but rarely all of them. Don’t you worry, these five are all winners! I couldn’t pick a favorite. I loved them all. Enjoy all five! Bravo again!”

“I can’t say anything except WOW WOW WOW, usually when you by a box set there is maybe one book that didn’t really hold your interest but not with this one each book gets you right from the start all the way to the end.”

“This anthology is worth 10 stars. All of the stories were wonderful, they had characters and situations you could relate to and best of all they all had epilogue.”

“Wonderful stories! Rarely do I find an anthology where I actually enjoy every story in the set. But this is one of them! All authors are extremely talented! I couldn’t pick a favorite if I had to! All of them were delightful.”

Only $0.99 on Amazon today or free through Kindle Unlimited! A synopsis of the stories are noted below. This is a GREAT deal and worth more than the diet coke from McDonald’s that I would have spent that dollar on!

MAIL ORDER MIDWIFE by Kirsten Osbourne – Widowed midwife Patsy Lawrence spent too much time working and not enough with her young daughter. She knew Emily’s childhood would be over before she realized it, so she responded to an ad for a mail-order bride, hoping for a better future for them both.

Dr. Wesley Hardy needed a wife to complete him, so he sent a letter to a mail-order bride agency back East. When he received a letter from a widow with a young daughter, he was thrilled with everything but her profession. Could he live with the fact that his new bride was a midwife? Or would they be destined to live without love for the rest of their days?

A BROKEN WING by Amelia C. Adams – Bored beyond all reason while riding a train from Missouri to Colorado, Trinity Scott amuses herself by imagining things about the passengers around her, including the handsome man sitting across the aisle. With his dark curly hair and warm brown eyes, he’s certainly intriguing, and the fact that his arm is in a sling makes him all the more a curiosity.

But when three dangerous men board the train, her desire for adventure and excitement takes a sinister turn, and she must call on her inner strength to do what’s needed to survive.

THE MARSHAL’S REBELLIOUS BRIDE by Cassie Hayes – U.S. Marshal Curtis ‘Griff’ Griffith is on the trail of a wanted man. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by the newest resident of the Dalton Brothers Ranch. So why does he keep returning? It’s certainly not to see the beautiful-but-bullheaded Catherine James.

Catherine has no interest in men or marriage, but there aren’t many choices for single ladies to earn a living on a remote Texas ranch. When she discovers that she holds the key to capturing the outlaw — and collecting some of the reward — she doesn’t hesitate to force Griff’s hand.

Will they kill each other before they find the murderer, or will they risk their damaged hearts for a shot at a new life?

COURTING MISS CARTWRIGHT by Kristin Holt – Courtship, by the book, is supposed to be easy…

As the daughter of an unwed mother, Felicity Percival is accustomed to rejection. Her mother was her only family … until she is summoned to the reading of her father’s will. To learn he was a married preacher with a second daughter horrifies her. The stipulations attached to her inheritance infuriate her. The last thing she expects is the emergence of truths that destroy her life-long beliefs. The last thing she wants is to feel the blush of first love for a man she can’t have.

The road to Happily Ever After should not be rocky, especially for level-headed, rule-following Rocky Gideon. His courtship of the minister’s daughter is successful and on track, surviving everything life throws at them … except the appearance of the preacher’s other daughter. Felicity asks too many questions, forces him to evaluate his carefully constructed plan, and somehow steals his heart.

Rocky desperately needs a solid marriage that will go the distance … so why does he yearn for the wrong sister?

WANTED: THE PERFECT HUSBAND by Margery Scott – Sybil Franklin needs a husband—fast! In order to keep her ranch, she must be married within thirteen days. Devin McGregor meets all her requirements and comes highly recommended, but he has no interest in marriage.

Devin McGregor had a ranch once, a fiancée, a future. He made a mistake, and it cost him everything. Now, even though he’d love to own his own land again, he’s afraid to risk failure.

Sybil decides to post an advertisement for the perfect husband. As Devin tries to protect her from being taken advantage of, his feelings for her grow, but his fear of failing her won’t let him accept her proposal.

Both Sybil and Devin have choices, but making the right choice means they could both lose everything.

Catching Up with Peggy L. Henderson

Today we’re catching up with the brilliant Peggy L. Henderson, author of the fabulous Yellowstone Romance Series. Peggy has been described by her fans as “the J.K. Rowling of Yellowstone”. The visual descriptions in her books are stunning, the romance is sensuous and her time travel stories are on fire!  Many people might turn away at the words time travel, but if you’ve not tried these books, this reader strongly suggests that you are missing out on an extremely well-written, historical western romance series with a hybrid twist!

Peggy’s new release, Yellowstone Legacy, released on July 12th, and her devoted fans are commenting that their heads exploded with all the twists and turns revealed in the pages within.

“What we think we know may be completely different…”

Nurse Michaela Stephens has led a quiet, ordinary life, limited by restrictions and fear of making mistakes. When she is accused of wrongdoing on the job, escaping to the wilds of Montana seems like the best way to overcome her insecurities. What she thought she left behind is about to come back to haunt her in ways she never expected.

As a descendant of the guardians of ancient Yellowstone, Matunaaga has waited a long time to discover his destiny. Content and secure in his life, he is guided by a sense of duty and obligation to help ensure the future preservation of the sacred mountains. He’s ready to do just about anything to fulfill his role, except the one thing his vision requires of him.
When Mat is thrust into the world he gladly left behind as a boy, the woman from his vision is the only one who can help him find his way. Michaela must learn to set aside her fears, while Mat seeks to convince her of the truth she tries to deny. With forces at work to tear them apart, trust and love may be the key to survival as Mat and Michaela seek to protect the future generations guarding Yellowstone.

***Content warning: This book contains mild language, mild violence, and intimacy between consenting adults. Heat rating 3 out of 5, PG13

***While Yellowstone Legacy is a complete romance between the two central characters in this novel, certain events that happened in prior books in the series come into play in Yellowstone Legacy. For better enjoyment and understanding of this story, it is recommended that you are familiar with at least the following titles: Yellowstone Heart Song, Yellowstone Deception, and Yellowstone Origins.

Thanks for joining us today, Peggy!

Q. Why Yellowstone National Park? What drew you to that area?

I went on my first-ever camping trip the summer after my high school graduation, with then-future Mr. H. We went to Yellowstone, and I absolutely fell in love with the area.  From reading westerns (by a German author who had never been to the US, writing westerns set in the US), I was already fascinated with all things Wyoming, Montana, Rocky Mountains and mountain men, but that trip just solidified my love for the wild and beautiful Rockies, and Yellowstone especially. There’s just something so timeless and magical there, it’s hard to describe. Ever since that first trip, we’ve been back almost every year.

Q. How many more books (at this time) will be in the Yellowstone Romance Series?
(Note: currently 7 books, 3 novellas, 1 short story and 1 cross-over book with Teton series)

I have one more full-length planned in the series (Book 8 – Yellowstone Legends), and there’s another novella swirling around in my head, but who knows? The first book was supposed to be a standalone, then it was supposed to end with a sequel, then Book 4 was the end, then Book 5 was the absolute last one….

The Yellowstone characters cross over into the Teton books and vice versa, and they will also appear in the Wilderness Brides series.

Q. I’ve been told that authors write a little bit of themselves into each book. Which heroine is most like you? Is any hero most like Mr. Henderson?

From the Yellowstone books, the heroine most like me has to be Riley from Yellowstone Origins –book nerd and science geek, and a complete klutz. I’m also a lot like quiet Jana from Deception, but I don’t think I could hold it together the way she did in her story.

Mr. H is a little bit in all of the heroes, I think – he’s very outdoorsy, which all of the heroes are, and he’s the one who got me started with the great outdoors, like so many of the heroes teach the heroines in the books. He’s my best friend and he challenges me, and accepts me the way I am (just like all the heroes in my books relate to their heroines)

Q. How do you decompress once you’ve released a book? The pressure is hopefully off of you now, so how do you reconnect with Peggy?

I think the pressure is greater once the book is released, at least for the first week or so. It’s always a scary thing to set a new book free. It’s the same with every release. There’s definitely pressure during the writing process, but the worst is around release time. I’m not sure I really decompress once a book is done. I’m mainly trying to leave the world behind that I just finished writing about, and try and get into the heads of a new set of characters for the next story. That usually takes a few days or a week, because it’s sometimes hard to let go after spending weeks and months with one set of characters.

I joked after my last release – Cora’s Pride in March (which happened to be a few days before we went camping) that I really need to make going camping after a book release a tradition. That didn’t happen this time, but it would be a great way to re-connect with me!

Q. What is do you miss about Germany (or that you love going back to)?

The thing I miss most about Germany (and I haven’t been back in a long time, although my brother and his family live there) is the small town I lived in. Moving to the suburbs of Los Angeles was major culture shock for me, and even after all these years, I still miss the small farming town I grew up in.  And seasons…I definitely miss seasons.

Q. Have you ever thought about moving from California and getting closer to the mountains and the rivers that obviously speak to you?

Every.Single.Day… and I’m working on making that a reality soon.

Q. Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

I don’t know who said it, and it’s a simple quote, but it’s always stuck with me: “Bark less, Wag more.” And this one: “Of all the roads you take, make sure one of them is dirt.”

Q. Tell us about the writing assistant. How old is he? How does he guard the notebook best?

The Writing Assistant is my 16 year old orange ball of fur. He was a feral kitten I caught when he was about 5 weeks old, along with his mama. We had her spayed, and her kitten came to live in the house with us, and he decided that was a pretty great place to be.

He has the important job of being my arm rest when I write, and he sleeps on the notebook (which contains my hand written notes and plot lines for my books) He is easily bribed with catnip and canned cat food.

Q. What is the strangest request (or gift) you’ve ever received from a fan?

I don’t think I’ve ever received any strange requests or gifts that I can remember. There have been requests for stories or unsolicited ideas, but nothing that really stands out.

I’ve received some awesome (not in the least bit strange) gifts from readers – paintings of the Lower Falls in Yellowstone and the Tetons, quilts with Yellowstone theme, and a pillow case, and a really great piece of art wall hanging.  On canvas, the fan put together a collage of pins and charms and various other miniature items that represented things from the Yellowstone stories, and she put it together in the shape of an arrowhead. It is such a neat and very personal piece of artwork!

Peggy never thought she’d be a writer, much less publish a book someday. She always wanted to be a veterinarian but life had other plans for her. When she and her husband decided to start a family, vet school pretty much went out the window. Peggy used to work with a vet who had three children while going through vet school. To this day, that woman is her hero.

Peggy was born and raised in Germany, but long before her family immigrated to the U.S., she was fascinated with the American West. Peggy grew up on german-dubbed episodes of Little House, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza, as well as the adventure novels set in the old American West by German author, Karl May.

Married to her high school sweetheart, and together with their two sons, Peggy and her husband currently make their home in Southern California. The family also includes a Labrador Retriever, a welsh pony, a miniature horse, three cats, four bearded dragons, and a flock of laying hens. Almost every summer since she graduated from high school, Peggy and her husband spend two weeks camping in Yellowstone National Park.

Welcome, Rain Trueax!

On the Pioneer Hearts blog today, we welcome Rain Trueax!  Rain has 11 historical romances (Oregon and Arizona) and 12 contemporary suspense and paranormal romances– all based in the American West. She is a member of RWA, PAN, Women Writing the West, and Saguaro Romance Writers.

When writing, she works from her family sheep and cattle operation in the Oregon Coast Range, a desert home near Tucson, Arizona, or from their RV somewhere in the inter-mountain west via satellite link. Her husband of over 50 years, who she calls Ranch Boss, and she have two grown children, and four grandchildren.

In all of Rain’s romances, the underlying themes are the values of generosity, hard work, courage, community, and living true to oneself–all the while intertwining the complications of physical attraction, sexuality and outside challenges, whether, malicious or societal. Her stories are ‘Romances with an Edge’ as they are stories of adventure and danger. They are generally spicy (between 3 and 4 on a scale of 1-5). Characters sometimes use strong language, as suits the action.

Rain’s newest release is a paranormal book titled Enchantress’ Secret: Hemstreet Witches Book 1

Rain, tell us about your new paranormal release ~ Enchantress’ Secret: Hemstreet Witches Book 1

The idea of writing something different, from my historical romances, began in December in Tucson, Arizona. Barrio Viejo is an old neighborhood south of downtown. I was returning after a few years absence. My first time in the barrio had been to find el Tiradito, a wishing shrine with a tragic and magical history.

Years back, around the shrine, had been deteriorating homes, closed businesses, no air-conditioning– so open doors with the scent of food cooking, sometimes old men sitting on stoops. The doors were worn, wonderful for photographs, but frankly the kind of neighborhood developers tend to see as ground for fancy hotels or convention centers.

That could have happened to Barrio Viejo except for a determined group who fought to see it protected as historic and restored. That’s what we found in December. It was being revitalized, its history proudly shared on plaques. We were told some of the homes had been totally gutted but outside you’d never know it.

Taking many photos, one in particular led me to see a potential book. The home was pueblo style in a row of many like it. In front was a motorcycle. I saw the hero for the first book—well not actually but in my imagination. Because of the mystical history of the neighborhood, it seemed possibly a place of ghosts, spirits and maybe a few unusual people.

With one Arizona historical I still had to get out, it wasn’t until March I could get serious about planning this new series. My characters would be artists, musicians, writers, detectives, entrepreneurs, along with families who had a long history in Tucson. What if, for one such family, that long history meant witches and shamans?

With all the mythologies regarding witches, many of which are actively believed in the Southwest, my stories needed to set parameters for this fantasy world. The Hemstreet witches come out of the Yaqui traditions on one side, and warlocks and witches on the other. While each of the women (four sisters, widowed mother, disapproving aunt, and two grandmothers) have their own specific gifts, all can draw upon earth energy. Born into a family where mystical powers were the expected, the important thing has been to use their abilities responsibly, never selfishly, and always for good. They also have to be careful who knows about them given superstition is not just in other countries. While having abilities most humans can’t imagine, they live normal length lives and can be killed.

Each of the five books will be a complete romance but underlying all stories will be the family and its interactions. With one exception, the heroes represent the rest of us. They are men who have no idea a mystical world exists, that there are ghosts and spirit beings. They are, however, strong men, who have their own human power, which they must draw upon, when they find life isn’t quite what they thought.
